Halloween has a reputation for one color palette: orange and black. And it works — for about an hour. The truth is that the best Halloween designs — the ones that get saved, pinned and copied — use a family of colors that sets a mood, not just a holiday. Whether you're decorating a living room, designing a party invitation, or making printables for your classroom, the palette you choose decides the whole vibe.

Below are 25 Halloween color palettes, organized by mood, with hex codes you can copy straight into your design tool. And when you want a palette that doesn't exist yet, our free Halloween color palette generator creates one in one click — in 10 themes and 6 harmony styles, with HEX and RGB export.

7. How to pick the right palette

  • Match the mood, not the holiday. A haunted-house party wants midnight blues and blood reds; a trunk-or-treat for kids wants candy pinks and bright oranges.
  • Use the 60-30-10 rule. 60% of a space or design should be the dominant dark color, 30% a supporting color, and 10% a bright accent. This instantly makes any design look professional.
  • Check contrast. Dark text on dark backgrounds is the #1 amateur mistake. Our generator's contrast chips show you exactly how each color behaves with dark and light text.
  • Keep it to 3–5 colors. More than five colors in one design reads as chaos. Five is the maximum our generator produces, deliberately.
  • Test on your real surface. A palette that looks great on screen can disappear on a dark wall or a phone screen. Print a swatch sheet (the generator exports one as PNG) and hold it up in your room before committing.

8. From palette to project

Once you have a palette, put it to work:

  • Party invites: Use the accent color for the date and time, the dark color for the background. See our invitation maker.
  • Posters: One big title in the brightest color, everything else in supporting colors. See the poster generator.
  • Home decor: Paint or buy decor in the dominant color, then add small accents — ribbons, bows, napkins — in the accent color.
  • Printables: Match your coloring pages, labels and signs to your party palette for a cohesive event. Every printable maker on this site lets you pick the theme.
